Hello! We are the Bremen House, a queer-centered and BIPOC-friendly communal house in North Portland/Portsmouth and we are currently looking for a new housemate! We will have an additional room open in Summer 2024.

A little about us:
Bremen House is a small intentional community/co-op house in North Portland. As housemates, we have our own lives and finances, but generally, we like each other/ care for one another, and work together toward common goals. We collaborate on the chores and projects needed to keep the house running and are committed to communal food practices including rotating cooking/cleaning duties and maintaining a vegetarian kitchen (although much of the food we make is vegan). We set aside time for house meetings, currently Sunday evenings, and get together for house dinners throughout the week. We are committed to developing a community that resists relationships of convenience and transaction, both in housing and in our larger neighborhood and city. We are looking for a housemate who is interested in the potential of a long-term fit and who is actively seeking and preferably has some experience with community living.

The house is cozy, welcoming, supportive, and in a great location with a beautiful garden where we grow fresh produce, share with (currently only one) chicken, and host gatherings. We have a cob pizza oven, gazebo, piano, lots of instruments, fully equipped kitchen, craft area, and fermenting kitchen. We play board games like terraforming mars or Wingspan, mushroom hunt, go on outdoor hiking/skiing/fossil hunting adventures, and generally do fun things frequently. We prefer housemates that don’t spend all their time in their rooms or out. You should want to hang with us at least occasionally.

Additional things to consider: We are a low-scent household (no perfumes, avoid scented soaps, no smoking or incense.) We are ok with some infrequent edibles use, alcohol consumption, and mushrooms, but it’s not a good fit if this is a lifestyle/everyday thing. House meals are vegetarian/vegan, and we each are responsible for one meal- usually dinner- once a week. We value direct communication, self-awareness, cultural awareness, and agility, as well as neurodivergence and disability awareness.

LBGTQ+/POC safe space is a non-negotiable priority. This means we’re all working to deepen our awareness and resistance to systems of oppression and our own relationships to them. We work to create an environment that is safe from microaggressions and where our identities will be respected and valued.

You:
Interested in finding a long-term fit if the initial trial goes well. Amicable, tolerant, and excited to engage with people. Comfortable with direct and kind communication, communal decision-making, conflict mediation, and specifically looking for community/collective housing. Available Sunday evenings for house meetings, around some evenings for shared meals, and willing to cook & clean once a week and work to keep the house running smoothly. Mostly drug-free (infrequent pot outside is ok) but we enjoy brewing and occasional social alcohol consumption. Probably no additional cats are sought and absolutely no dogs.

This is a room in a 7 bedroom house with 3 full shared bathrooms, one on each floor. We currently have 5 housemates and 1 indoor-only cat. We leave one room available for guests/workaways/couchsurfers, within health & safety precautions.

Bedroom available: Second Floor, 13.5x10'. Hardwood floors, spacious closet, windows facing the east. You can hear some kitchen and common area noise.

Rent is $550/month + split utilities (~$100/) and shared house expenses (food, misc. supplies, budgeted equipment, etc. ~$150). We also all pitch in $50/month for biannual budgeted large expenses like a new projector. Move in costs: are first ($550)/last($550), damage/cleaning deposit ($275) and last month shared bills deposit ($125) for a total of $1,500.

C**** (health & safety stuff): We remain cautious in public spaces and around others depending on how things are. Our house policies are based on the needs of our most vulnerable housemates. Feel free to ask us for more details, CL doesn't let us talk about it here, which is infuriating.

Accessibility: Four stairs at both entrances. Basem*nt commons are accessed by a staircase. Available room accessed by a staircase. Bathrooms are not wheelchair accessible. Mental health and neurodivergent communication styles and needs are supported. Low scent environment.

To apply: please fill out the form on our website or send us an email!
We review applications on Sundays and will reach out with requests for interviews the following week if everything looks good.
